She killed 11-year-old Leandra Rosado and injured six other girls while speeding at 80 mph down the Henry Hudson Parkway with a blood-alcohol of 0.132 — it’s no wonder Carmen Huertas is on suicide watch.
The terrible accident on Sunday has left Huertas in Harlem Hospital with a broken arm — but her dark thoughts are what has doctor’s concerned. “The first thing she says to anyone who walks into her room is that she deserves to die, that she is going to kill herself. She’s not doing well right now,” says a source.
But to the families involved, especially Leandra Rosado’s father, Lenny, killing herself would be the easy way out. “I would rather have her spend the rest of her life in jail and have her think about what she did,” he said. “I’m going to be thinking about it the rest of my life — what my daughter was thinking about when that car was tumbling. So should she.”
Huertas has been charged with DWI and with vehicular manslaughter, so a lifetime in prison thinking about the repercussions of her rash act isn’t out of the question. To drive drunk with six little kids in the car? That’s definitely a decision that will haunt you forever. (NY Daily News)
